critical error after woocommerce update

After I updated WooCommerce last week, I started getting critical errors for customers.

The email sent by WordPress mentions a WC_Email error:

Customers are not getting to the site, not even the shop or the 12mm hose clip page.

My helper who created the site is away till next Monday, unfortunately.

A number of fatal errors, especially relating to filters on the WC_Email class, were fixed in WooCommerce 10.9.3 (July 3).

Please verify the version of WooCommerce installed on your site under Plugins.

If the version you have installed is lower then 10.9.3, the update to 10.9.3 itself is the fix 🙂

That makes sense, but I don't have access to the admin panel so I can't go in their to update or do anything. There's no admin panel to be found either.

How do I do this, without the admin panel? I mean, the site just shows the critical error...

you can try this:

See the link to get in recovery mode in the error email that WordPress has sent.

Put the plugin causing the issue in "Paused" state and try the upgrade.

Else simply rename the folder for the plugin in question using an sftp connection.

You should make sure something in your theme/filtering is filtering the WC_Email class. That can be done by a plugin or a snippet of code. Typically, it's a snippet used for bcc:ing or changing from address of emails sent by WooCommerce. Find your snippets plugin, and search for the woocommerce_email tag or anything close to it. If you can find the snippet, there may be an issue there.

I don't know if you're using a child theme. Check that as well!

I got it back! Used "switch to recovery mode" and that worked.

Turned out to be an old little piece of code to add a BCC address to emails that are sent to people when they order.

With the 10.9.3 update I have the site up and running again.

That's good news: one last check for you would be to look at the transactional email log under WooCommerce status to make sure that all of those BCCs are being sent.
