WooCommerce 10.8 update blocked on 6.8

i'm getting a client shop that says WooCommerce 10.8 is available to update but when clicking the update screen, it says it needs WP 6.9+. We're on 6.8 as the theme developer didn't say 6.9+ support. https://developer.woocommerce.com/2026/05/26/woocommerce-10-8-0-release/

So do I first WP update or leave both?

I suggest you first upgrade WordPress to 6.9 (the latest 6.9 version) on a staging copy and confirm it still works OK. Look at the theme's templates and checkout there.

Then upgrade to 10.8 on the staging copy.

Make sure it still works OK there -- and then only then, on production.

As WordPress 7 isn't required to run the update to WooCommerce 10.8 the minimal version is 6.9.

The theme hasn't been tested on 7 at all, nor on 6.9... So perhaps a safer first step is to move to 6.9.

On what PHP version are you running the shop, i ask since the hosting control panel of a similar site says php version is 8.1 and we're not sure whether we need to make any other changes to make this work.

You can actually upgrade WordPress and WooCommerce without any issues if you're running PHP 8.1.

The recent PHP support clarification is about how core labels PHP 8 support.

It doesn't set a new minimum for shops -- so PHP 8.1 runs WordPress 6.9 and WooCommerce 10.8 without changes.

Since the initial release of 10.8 there's a point release (10.8.1) that re-enables new WooPayments merchants. Install WooCommerce 10.8.1 if you're using WooPayments.

Our Staging system started on WordPress 6.8 and then we've upgraded it to the most recent update - 6.9 - and upgraded the WooCommerece system to the 10.8.1 version.

The theme and the checkout were both the same so we've done the same thing in production and the client hasn't noticed anything.
